Commission A Painting

Dave Reiter

Thank you for considering a custom painting. This page explains my commission process and provides some examples of my commission work.

I specialize in large-scale custom pieces for public spaces, corporations, and individuals. It gives me great joy to experience a space, envision what it could be, shoot photographs or find images that compliment and enhance the environment, build the substrate, and then create a painting that fully embodies and enhances the overall atmosphere of the location. My commission work has ranged from miniature 6x6 inches all the way up to 60x120 triptychs.

The images above are of a 60 x 120 inch triptych painting for the Grange Hall Food Court in Colorado.

Here are a few points to think about when considering a commission painting:

  • My commission work has ranged from miniature, 6x6 inches, up to 60x120 inch triptychs.

  • Most commission work I receive falls into three categories: Subject (aspens, structures, sunflowers or other flowers, etc.), nostalgic memories (someplace you grew up, a vacation spot, or something else that sparks a memory), and abstract paintings.

  • Many people who commission me to do a painting have seen my work in person before or have previously purchased a painting from me. When deciding to commission a painting, clients often review my previous work, see something they like, and ask me to incorporate those elements in the final painting. These might include a particular "feel" of a color palette, thick or thin paint application, or other design specific elements.

  • For various reasons, I prefer to travel to meet with clients, see the space where the painting will ultimately reside, show previous work, etc. All this background information and "story-gathering" helps me make the best commission piece possible that you will be proud to own and to show to family, friends and colleagues.

  • I make my own substrates, which keeps the quality of the painting consistent with every size of painting.

  • Although I can use a photo reference that you provide, the best process is when I am able to physically visit the spot and incorporate my own photo references.

  • Please keep in mind that I paint in my unique style, so your request must work well under that framework. I cannot be authentic while mimicking someone else's style.

  • Concerning contracts, every client has different needs (i.e., public spaces, corporations, designers, individuals, etc.), so I rarely use a one-size-fits-all contract. I will work out an agreement based on the uniqueness of the circumstances. Payment terms are worked into the contract.

  • Based on the client's needs, I sometimes do sample drawings, color swatches, etc.

  • All the work is done primarily in oils unless the piece works best with additional mixed media.

  • All paintings are designed in such a way that they can either be displayed with or without a frame.
